Hall of Fame
A two-sport athlete while at Lewis, Mariani has distinguished himself not only as a player, but in illustrious coaching career upon graduation. He has compiled overall coaching records of 403-119 in baseball and 96-31 in football. An assistant coach or athletic director at Holy Cross, Notre Dame, St. Viator and St. Rita high schools, he has been involved with numerous championships. He also served as general manager of both the Chicago Fire and Chicago Wind of the World Football League. Enrolled on a football scholarship, Mariani led Lewis in yards per carry in 1952. Leaving the team in 1953 to devote full time to baseball, he started all four years, stroking the winning hit in Lewis' first baseball championship.
Mariani was recently inducted into the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches' Association Hall of Fame.
