Not one who likes the sidelines, Polka also played safety, halfback and linebacker on the defensive squad for the Flyers. he was named Most Improved Player in 1953, and led the squad to a Midlands Conference Championship that same year.
From 1964 to 1973, Polka coached junior high football for St. Paul the Apostle School in Richardson, Texas, with a career record of 66-10-5. Two years, his teams were undefeated and went on to win state championships. In nine seasons, no team had more than two losses. Polka was proud of his "alumni" and one year counted 43 of his former athletes playing high school football, most of them first string, with eight team captains.
In 1973, Polka was awarded one of the first commendations ever oresented by the State of Texas Child Welfare Department for his part in organizing "kids Day" at Texas Stadium.
