Taking over the nationally ranked baseball program at St. Xavier College (now University) in 1980 from Lewis Hall of Famer John Boles, Morrey became one of the most successful coaches in the college ranks. Compiling a 13-year record of 574-349, his teams won District 20championships in 1981, 1982, and 1988, finishing fourth and third nationalling in '82 and '88 respectively.
After a successful collegiate career at Lewis as a 16-7 pitcher for Gordie Gillespie's Baseball Flyers, Morrey began his coaching career at Cass Junior High as a teacher and coach of three sports. In 1976, he joined Gillespie in establishing the powerful baseball program at the College of St. Francis, serving as assistant coach as well as assistant athletic director. In moving to St. Xavier in '80, Morrey coupled his head baseball duties with the school's athletic director position.
In August of 1992, Morrey resigned his position at St. Xavier to take over the baseball program at Division I Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.
